California-The Institute of Plant Research announced that it has developed a plant that can photosynthesize with a speed and efficiency of not less than 100 times that of the existing plants, as a result of vegetable transgenic experiments.
Photosynthesis is a function that synthesizes sugars (carbohydrates) from the water and carbon dioxide in the air. All plants have this function.
This new plant grows rapidly due to its overwhelming photosynthesis capability. By growing this plant on a world-wide scale, it is hoped that the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will be decreased and that the global warming problem will be solved in the future. Further, including this function in cactus as a measure against desertification is also being considered.
