This time, I interviewed Mr. X who offered funds for rebuilding the Ueno Great Buddha.
Mr. X who cannot divulge his real name for some reason said the following about the revival of the Ueno Great Buddha.
"I wanted to offer a bright topic in a world in which people are confused. Since society is severe, people are irritated, regardless of whether they are old or young. Therefore, everybody is asking for healing.
That’s why I thought that the Great Buddha was required in Tokyo, and that it should be located in a conspicuous place. Everybody feels at ease when there is a Great Buddha.
I think that this was the original reason that the Great Buddha was built. In a sense, it goes back to it. I think that what is necessary to everyone now is just to see the Great Buddha's quiet face and to feel at ease. I’m glad if one comes to see it if he has quarreled with his family, or has trouble in a company.
Then, if he regains a feeling of great calm or a gentleness of mind, I am quite satisfied. As I was born in Tokyo and grew up in Tokyo, I wish those who live in Tokyo or those who come to Tokyo became pleasant and wear a smile.
Another factor is that aging is progressing rapidly these days. Elderly people, who ask for strong emotional attachment, are increasing in numbers. However, there is no space where such elderly people can relax in Tokyo. I wish to create one in Ueno. "
Mr. X continued as follows,
"I do not want to leave my name to history as a creator of the Great Buddha. Therefore, my name is not disclosed. I will be satisfied if I have done any beneficial thing at all to the world, although it may merely be a small contribution. If I merely earn money and consume it, there will have been no reason for me to have existed in the world, will there?"
Mr. X expressed his idea indifferently and without any emotion. I have not expected that such a person may truly appear in Japan.
When Mr. X finished speaking, he shook hands agreeably and went home smiling and waving his hand. A very good atmosphere remained behind at the place of the interview.
