JAPAN:Ueno revitalized by "Great Buddha business"

The number of people who has visited the recently reconstructed Great Buddha at Ueno have increased, making Ueno town itself increasingly lively.

Bearing in mind how few people left alive today would have caught sight of the Buddha before the head fell during the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, it seems clear that many of the increasing numbers of the visitors to Ueno have come to view the Great Buddha in its new home in Tokyo.

It seems that the beneficial economic effects are already evident in the Ueno neighborhood. Indeed, the Ueno Seiyoken restaurant, which is located next to the Great Buddha, is fully booked every day, and the number of visitors to the Chinese restaurant “Totenko,” which is located in front of the Shinobazu pond in Ueno park has increased sharply.

Sales in the Ameyoko shopping center, which is located near the Ueno station, have, on the whole, risen by about 10% when compared with the transactions before the Great Buddha construction.

The phrase “Great Buddha business” has begun to be whispered.

Although Ueno has, for many years, been less popular than Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Ikebukuro, etc. many are beginning to wonder whether Ueno’s status will improve on the back of this newly erected Great Buddha.
