The “Great Buddha Line” experiences a boom among tourists from outside Japan

The line that has become known as the “Great Buddha Line,” due to the fact that its stations serve the tourist sights of the Ueno Great Buddha and the Kamagaya Great Buddha, has attracted huge attention from tourists outside Japan.

Although, traditionally, there was no Buddhist institution in Tokyo that attracted foreign tourists, the “Great Buddha Line” campaign has begun to attract the interest of foreigners.

Foreign visitors are drawn to the Buddhist sights—the Ueno Great Buddha and the Kamagaya Great Buddha—that occur along this line. These sights are regarded by foreign tourists as providing an experience of the traditional atmosphere of Japan in Tokyo. This new popularity has emerged on the back of the reconstruction of the Ueno Great Buddha, which happened earlier this year.

It is a common, these days, to see foreign tourists near Ueno or Kamagaya station asking “Diabutsu?” meaning “Great Buddha?” in Japanese.

The management of Keisei Lines is delighted with the increase in the number of foreign visitors who are now using the Skyliner Airport Express, which operates between Narita Airport and Ueno.
